January, 2014 Update.
Roy is now a few months from his 100th birthday, and the past year has had its ups and downs. His legs have pretty well given out and he no longer walks, and since February has moved to the full care side of the facility. So he is either in bed or in a wheel chair, and essentially is only up for meals. The care staff get him up and dressed, and wheel him to the dining room and back. So he mostly sleeps and needs help with all bodily functions, with only occasional family visits to break a rather bleak routine. But he is well cared for, and the cost, with no subsidy, coming in at around $6000 per month, is still within his means. He has had a couple of stints in hospital, and on each occasion has made a comeback against all odds. Just over two months ago he wound up in hospital and we did not expect him to see the following week, let alone Christmas. However, he improved enough to be returned to the care home, and over the holiday period he had good days and times when he appeared to be failing. More recently, he has started to eat regular meals, has a healthy appetite, and is back to normal.
